WordPress 4.0

More information on the new release is available in the following post: WordPress 4.1

Sometimes it’s the small details that improve the whole experience. That’s why version 4.0 focuses on improving the user experience, but also has new features to offer. From now on, working with plugins, images and other media is even more intuitive and flexible.

WordPress 4.0 is now available for all 1&1 customers in the 1&1 App Center.

WordPress 4.0 highlights:

  • Scrolling in the editor has been further improved. Sidebar and main content now scroll independently. The toolbar in the editor is now more sticky which makes editing longer posts even easier!
  • The media library now offers a grid view!
  • The language selection during the WordPress installation has been improved. Install WordPress directly in your language!
  • The plugin details and settings sections are now more informative, clearly structured and easier to use. Finding plugins and setting them up has never been easier.
  • New direct preview of embedded URLs in the visual editor.
All you need to do is paste a YouTube or Flickr URL into your post and WordPress automatically embeds the video. This easy embedding process is supported by many services such as YouTube, Twitter, Flickr, Hulu, TED… (learn more: WordPress Codex: Embeds)

I am unable to update my site to wordpress 4.0 from my dashboard. I keep getting the following error. Please let me know what I might be doing wrong.
Thank you very much for your help.

    Warning:

    Could not copy files.

    Installation Failed

    1. Marko Heijnen says:

Did you try to download the zip file from WordPress.org and upload the new files through FTP? The issue is that some permissions are of and WordPress is really strict in that.

If it still doesn’t work out, I could ask our customer care team to do the upgrade for you.

  2. Patrick says:

Actually – you can’t update from your WordPress dashboard if you are in Free or Manual installations. Sure – you can press the button – but the install fails.

This isn’t new, but I’d hope that 1and1 had addressed this issue. Here’s what you get:

Warning: copy(/homepages/16/***/htdocs/clickandbuilds/WordPress/MyBlog2/wp-admin/images/w-logo-white.png) [function.copy]: failed to open stream: Permission denied in /homepages/16/***/htdocs/clickandbuilds/WordPress/MyBlog2/wp-admin/includes/class-wp-filesystem-direct.php on line 200

There is a small change that deleting /clickandbuilds/WordPress/MyBlog2/wp-admin/images/w-logo-white.png would solve the issue.
