Meet the new 1&1 WordPress Assistant

With the new 1&1 WordPress Assistant you can set up your site, pick a design you like and automatically install essential plugins in one step.

Many of you might have noticed the changes we introduced since November 2017. We released a new version of the 1&1 WordPress Assistant that was a lot friendlier while using the classic design approach.

We took the existing three-step-process that included a complicated plugin-selection page and replaced it with a simpler one-step-solution to help you set up a use case and a design (theme), choosing the recommended plugins for you automatically.

So, what changed in the last releases?

But, of course, progress never stops and the plan wasn’t to end there. We wanted to help you focus on your goals using a distraction-free design.

That’s why we rebuild the Assistant to have its own space, its own design, and an even clearer interface, by hiding unnecessary menus and elements.

Simplified design selection: While the functionalities of the Assistant stay roughly the same, with WordPress 4.9.3 we gave the use case & theme setup a makeover:

New login screen: The WordPress login screen has a new, matching look as well, taking you from the installation step to an almost live-ready website in a very smooth, yet pretty and uncomplicated way. Simply use your e-mail adress or WordPress username to login to your website.

And what’s for the future?

A lot of improvements and cool stuff will be coming next, as we want to continuously improve your WordPress experience and help you get online as quick as possible.

But the most important thing is: we want to work with you, for you! Your feedback is greatly appreciated and we will be glad to hear what you think in the comments section.

Hi there, I am so frustrated with my site. It seems that all the pages are available but not one will show up on my navigational taskbar. What am I doing wrong?

    1. 1and1help says:

      Hi Colleen,

you might want to read more about menus and menu items (like page links as items) in WordPress here:

A lot themes have pre-definied menus for the site navigation already.. So you just have to configure your pages as menu items. For further informations you might visit the documentation section of the theme developer website.

do you mean the new version of the 1&1 Assistant (it’s pretty easy and leads you from step to step) – or the next version 5.0 of WordPress, coming in the next months?

The biggest new feature of WordPress 5 will be the new post editor – called “Gutenberg”. Here you can find a little introduction from the Theme developers “elmastudio” (they are Germans, but the video is in English) :

You can already test Gutenberg on your current WordPress 4.9 if you like. provides it as a plugin for download here:

I have no idea how to get started building a portfolio home page for my new business. I have tried installing some of the themes but can remove previous text, borders, menus etc….

    1. 1and1help says:

      Hi Jilly Bond,

the 1&1 WordPress assistant is a tool which helps you step by step installing WordPress with your domain, chosing a theme and picking up some plugins.

For your first steps in using WordPress itself as a tool, I recommend to work with this link collection here:

  6. Jorge says:

I just hired a WP plan and tried to install the new website using the wizard but at the end got an error message stating “An error occurred during the installation” without further explanation. I tried several times today and always got the same message. Could anybody help me please?

    1. 1and1help says:

      Hi Jorge,

did you try the installation with the external domain i see in your contract? Please keep in mind that it can take up to 24 hours until the domain is working properly. If you just tried it minutes after activating the external domain, this is very likely the reason.

If this can’t be the reason: On which point exactly occurs this error? During one of the steps or at the very last step to finish the installation?

      Best regards,
      Michael, 1&1
